Aktun Chen, meaning "cenote with cave is inside" in Mayan, is located in the heart of the Riviera Maya, near Akumal.

It is the main cave system in Quintana Roo that is open to the public. It is populated by virgin forest, where tourism activities are carried out with the least impact on nature.

There are three caves here with interior cenotes, where you can see the beauty of thousands of calcium carbonate formations, made by the slow percolation of water over 5 million years. Various figures can be perceived that have been formed by water dripping and trickling down the walls of the cave. The water has shaped the rock and created figures alongside the huge amount of stalactites and stalagmites.

The Aktun Chen Cenote is in one of the last chambers of the main cave, it has pristine waters and is 12 meters deep. It is the only cenote in the Riviera Maya where swimming is not allowed to avoid muddying the water and to better conserve the beauty of this nature sanctuary.

The jungle begins outside the cenote, where breeding projects are carried out with endangered species such as night monkeys, toucans, parrots, white-tail deers, collared peccaries, among others. This process allows the young to be released and observed in their natural environment along the trails.

Aktun Chen is a must visit place to enjoy beautiful landscapes and get in touch with nature in Quintana Roo.
